Hey Mr. G.
So, I was looking at Louise Gluck, and I wasn't crazy about her poems, then I found another guy, Alojz Ihan, but he only has a few poems in english, and I've had one person who has just been tugging at my brain, but I'm not sure if you could consider her a contemporary poet. Francesca Lia Block, author of tons of books, but only 2 of them being poetry books. Do you think I could choose her, and if so, do you think two books would be enough to write the paper on? Is it too risky?

Kayla. The answers to your questions are yes, yes, and I don't know if "[she's] too risky," because I'm not familiar with her work. Here are three more names for you: Joanne Kyger, Catherine Wagner, Anne Waldman. Just post your final choice or let me know if you need more direction.

hi mr g!

I just emailed you but i thoguht you might respoend here quicker. Could you please give me the names of the "comedic" poets. If you are busy i understand, and in that case, I will choose Ed Sanders. I will be back to see if you respond.
THANKS!

Cynthia, No problem. Just here sifting through piles of grading (poor me, right--I know, I deserve it for assigning all this work.) Anyway, I gave Emily a similar list in class because she wanted the same thing as you...light, playful and / or funny. Anselm Hollo is all of the above. So is Bernadette Mayer. They are both prolific and wonderful writers. Michael Gizzi, Geoffrey Young, and Clark Coolidge are all great choices as well--they tend to play with language a bit more for humorous effect, but this is a blanket statement. Ed Sanders is still an option (for you, or anyone.)

I appreciated all of the suggestions that you gave to me, Mr. G., but I have actually decided to go on a gamble and pick Louise Gluck (with the accent mark over the "u") I feel like her poems will be very interesting to read.

Mr. G,
I was wondering if I could use Shel Silverstein as my poet. I know he died, but it wasn't that long ago. He passed away in 1999. Would that be okay?

R. Gallagher said...

Kristen, I'm sorry but Shel Silverstein can't be an option, and not because he is dead. Robert Creeley is dead, but Mels can still write on him because his death was recent. Your choice has more to do with the fact that S.S. is a children's author and it will make the paper too difficult for you. It's not that I don't value his work (and I don't have the time or ability to "define poetry" here), but you will help yourself by picking someone more clearly a "poet". If you give me some things you'd like in a poet, I can suggest some things later tonight.

My second choice was E.E Cummings

e.e.c been dead for far too long. Sorry. A couple years is the max on being dead. Okay, go Pats.
